NCAHT-IITM has developed a structured Wheelchair Skills Training Programme, which skilled peer trainers and therapists impart to improve the mobility of wheelchair users. This individualized training aims to promote independence through detailed assessment and systematic wheelchair configuration and provide training in real-life scenarios.
Professionals undergo comprehensive training covering essential skills, including thorough assessment processes for accurately identifying user needs. They learn to select the most appropriate wheelchairs and generate precise prescriptions tailored to individual requirements. Additionally, they are trained to promote proper wheelchair usage, emphasizing safety and optimizing functionality for users' benefit.
Caretakers, families, and the general public will be trained in key skills for effective support. This includes communication and consent, assessing situations, respecting preferences, balancing support and autonomy, safe lifting and assisting techniques, community engagement, and emergency preparedness.
