NCAHT-IITM, an initiative of the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR), was conceptualized by the TTK Center for Rehabilitation Research and Device Development, IIT Madras (R2D2) early in 2022 and launched in June 2023 to boost Research and Development in Assistive Technologies. The center is designed to foster social inclusion. It serves as an immersive experience center, underscoring the transformative power of assistive devices for Persons with Disabilities (PwDs), policymakers, rehabilitation professionals, and innovators.
R2D2 is the TTK Center for Rehabilitation Research and Device Development at IIT Madras, headed by Prof. Sujatha Srinivasan of the Department of Mechanical Engineering. The group is involved in research related to human movement and the design and development of rehabilitation and assistive technologies (AT) / devices for people with movement impairments.
The experience center aims to empower users by showcasing the possibilities through technology and minimizing unconscious bias in the minds of engineers/AT developers, policymakers, and the general public. Furthermore, the interactions can pave the way for better AT solutions and policies.
We aim to enhance users' independence by equipping them with the skills to navigate environmental and attitudinal barriers. Additionally, we offer training to families and caregivers to provide essential support, and professionals to provide enhanced AT services.
To foster the development of user-centric design and entrepreneurship, the center is working on innovative solutions such as a walking device for children with cerebral palsy, a lightweight wheelchair, a power assist, and a swimming pool lift.
We conduct comprehensive research to identify the user's needs, evaluate AT, and test the functionality of our developed devices.
We aim to create a knowledge base of best practices and AT policies to constantly be at the forefront of AT innovation, development, and provisioning.
We regularly organize inclusive sports, cultural, and art events, fostering a diverse and inclusive community for all participants to enjoy and engage in.
